IE Business School - MBA Program

It is now nearly 3 weeks since I landed in Madrid.
Having worked in London for the last 7 years, I never really thought that I would come to this wonderful city of Madrid to do my MBA program. Now after spending few days in the city and after some exceptional first impressions of the college, I am glad that I took a break in my career and came all the way to do a 1 year MBA.

IE Business School is known for it's continous standing in the World's Top 10 Biz Schools Rankings and that has been a major factor behind my decision to come here. Looking at the criteria of the Rankings, one would get an idea of the facilities of the school and other academic parameters. But still, I was really curious until I got here and attended the classes on Day 1.
I was curious to see what makes it stand apart from the rest of the Biz Schools?
I am a great fan of Financial Times and followed FT Business School Rankings for a long time. So, I was curious to see in person the various facets of the school that got Rank 6 from FT in worldwide rankings for a 2nd year, in a row!!

Well, I now understand.
We kicked off with an Opening Day ceremony on April 13. We had 2 days of Orientatio.
This is all just usual stuff, anywhere it's pretty much the same.
Yes, but then we had the real LAUNCH - a 10 day program covering a wide range of topics - World Awareness Seminars, Team Building, Communication, Soft skills, Networking and CV writing.
CV writing? In the first week of MBA itself, well, 1 year intensive MBA goes by pretty fast and it is never too soon to tidy up your CV and put it in the school's CV Book. After all, I want handsome returns on my hefty investment in to the MBA program!!

As Eric, our MBA program Director said, the LAUNCH program is a gentle launch pad to us newcomers into the next 12/13 months of intensive MBA program.
Having concluded the LAUNCH program today, I now have a very good understanding of the Quality, Challenge and Rigour of the year ahead and I am very much looking forward to it.

I would like to write more about the LAUNCH program itself and the DIVERSITY of the IE Community, but those are for later posts.

Save Water By Eating Healthy - Really?

Yes, you can save humongous amounts of water by making a few healthy changes to your eating habits – replace rice and wheat with millets and move from cane sugar to its natural alternatives. India is food secure today but that happened at the cost of water security. Furthermore, we failed to improve nutrition, with zinc and iron deficiencies prevailing widely among the population. With insensitive-to-water food choices, lack of modern farming techniques, low crop yield rates, alarming levels of wastage of farm produce, we are pushing our freshwater ecosystem to the brink! With just 4% of the world’s freshwater, we use up 80% of that freshwater to feed 18% of the world’s population. 80% of the water in our country is used for agriculture. The majority of this volume of water goes to water guzzler crops!     Water Guzzler Crops Rice, Sugar cane, and Wheat are water guzzler crops and in that order. It takes 3,000 – 5,000 liters of water to grow 1 kg of rice. It takes

Online Groceries: Welcome The New Leader of e-Commerce In India!

Online Grocery market will increase from Rs. 14,000 crores ($2 billion) today to Rs. 1.4 lakh crores ($20 billion) in just 5 years! Groceries will lead the aggressive e-commerce growth in India for the next 5 to 10 years. Back in 2006, when I used to live in the United Kingdom, I was super happy when the two supermarket giants, Tesco and Sainsburys started to take online orders and do door delivery. I was never a fan of going to the supermarket, drag the cart along to pick my groceries, stand in long queues to checkout and stuff. I always wondered if this would ever find ground in India with such a strong presence of neighborhood Kirana stores and the fact that still, only a minor segment of the overall groceries market is branded or organized.   Online Groceries and Indian Market Back in India during the first half of this decade, I was pleasantly surprised at the rise of online grocery marketplaces. It only made sense with all the fast-changing lifestyles, busy professional

Why Should Food Cost 30% Of Income?

You read it right, on average, most of us spend up to 30% of income on food. In the developed world, this figure is in the range of 6% - 15%. For wider economic participation of its population and to improve overall living standards, the food bill must make a much smaller hole into one’s pocket! While meat products also constitute a significant part of the food chain, I am limiting the scope of this article to vegetarian food products.   The Facts With over 50% of its land arable, India is the leader in the world in terms of arable land as a % of the total landmass. In terms of actual volume, with over 15 lakh square kilometers, India has the largest stock of arable land. Overall, India holds just under 10% of the world’s total arable landmass. *India is the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, second only to China. *India is the world’s largest dairy producer. *India is the world’s 2 nd largest rice producer and 3 rd largest wheat producer.
