A good start

When I arrived at IE in April, I was excited about the 13 month journey ahead of me. Apart from the academics, I was also looking forward to the extra-cirricular activities in the form of clubs, especially. There was a huge collection of clubs representing functional areas, geographical areas and other activities.

I was quiet surprised though, that there was no representation of UK on IE campus. In a business school of very high standing such as IE, to have no representation of an important world econmy such as UK, I felt that is not right. Furthermore, I lived in UK the last 8 years, graduated and started my career in the wonderful city of London.
So, I felt an urge to start a new club to represent UK on IE campus.

The result is IE UK Club Madrid Chapter. Along with the regualr activities of any club, which to arrange Key spealers, Seminars, Information sessions and workshops, I wanted to do something different, something that is pretty common in many universities but non-existant on IE campus, might be particualarly due to the hectic nature of 1 year MBA - a Newsletter.
A Newsletter would be both an effective communication tool and also a probable revenue generating source through corporate sponsorships.
So, our first newsletter was out on Monday, July 19, a simple 4 page first edition to a series of bi-weekly newsletters. We covered a small but wide ranging selection of topics from current affairs and recent developments in the business world of UK.
We had some good reviews on our first effort and that is encouraging.

On a different note, I made contacts at the British Chamber of Commerce on Spain and the UK Investment Board, UK Embassy, Spain.

Finally, we had a good start for the UK club initiative and now we have some grand plans down the line.

Save Water By Eating Healthy - Really?

Yes, you can save humongous amounts of water by making a few healthy changes to your eating habits – replace rice and wheat with millets and move from cane sugar to its natural alternatives. India is food secure today but that happened at the cost of water security. Furthermore, we failed to improve nutrition, with zinc and iron deficiencies prevailing widely among the population. With insensitive-to-water food choices, lack of modern farming techniques, low crop yield rates, alarming levels of wastage of farm produce, we are pushing our freshwater ecosystem to the brink! With just 4% of the world’s freshwater, we use up 80% of that freshwater to feed 18% of the world’s population. 80% of the water in our country is used for agriculture. The majority of this volume of water goes to water guzzler crops!     Water Guzzler Crops Rice, Sugar cane, and Wheat are water guzzler crops and in that order. It takes 3,000 – 5,000 liters of water to grow 1 kg of ri...

Online Groceries: Welcome The New Leader of e-Commerce In India!

Online Grocery market will increase from Rs. 14,000 crores ($2 billion) today to Rs. 1.4 lakh crores ($20 billion) in just 5 years! Groceries will lead the aggressive e-commerce growth in India for the next 5 to 10 years. Back in 2006, when I used to live in the United Kingdom, I was super happy when the two supermarket giants, Tesco and Sainsburys started to take online orders and do door delivery. I was never a fan of going to the supermarket, drag the cart along to pick my groceries, stand in long queues to checkout and stuff. I always wondered if this would ever find ground in India with such a strong presence of neighborhood Kirana stores and the fact that still, only a minor segment of the overall groceries market is branded or organized.   Online Groceries and Indian Market Back in India during the first half of this decade, I was pleasantly surprised at the rise of online grocery marketplaces. It only made sense with all the fast-changing lifestyles, busy pro...

Why Should Food Cost 30% Of Income?

You read it right, on average, most of us spend up to 30% of income on food. In the developed world, this figure is in the range of 6% - 15%. For wider economic participation of its population and to improve overall living standards, the food bill must make a much smaller hole into one’s pocket! While meat products also constitute a significant part of the food chain, I am limiting the scope of this article to vegetarian food products.   The Facts With over 50% of its land arable, India is the leader in the world in terms of arable land as a % of the total landmass. In terms of actual volume, with over 15 lakh square kilometers, India has the largest stock of arable land. Overall, India holds just under 10% of the world’s total arable landmass. *India is the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, second only to China. *India is the world’s largest dairy producer. *India is the world’s 2 nd largest rice producer and 3 rd largest wheat pro...
